Truth or Old Wives' Tale? Your Opinions, Please!

Voodoo FactoryImage by Pixteca MX
There is an old hoodoo (or Voodoo, if you prefer) saying that claims after you see a spirit once, you will see them all the time. Part of me wonders if this philosophy grew from the voodoo queens and witch doctors "polishing up" the prize for their students in order to keep them from giving up on charms and rootwork that could take days or weeks to perform. Another part of me wonders if there is any truth to those words.

I think I'm pretty close to coming to my own conclusion about this belief, but I'm wondering what you readers feel about this? Please, comment and share!

I think that once you see a specific spirit, it is easier to see that spirit in the future, with less effort on the spirits part or your own.

I'm a student of hypnosis, so my response will be heavily influenced by that school of thought...

In hypnosis, it is common to hear talk of positive and negative hallucinations. These are common hypnotic phenomena. A positive hallucination is seeing something that isn't there...a negative hallucination is not seeing something that is there.

The more interesting of the two for this particular claim is the negative variety. A simple example of a negative hallucination in an everyday situation is looking for your keys when you've lost them. Sometimes it takes someone else to point out that they are lying on the counter in plain sight in a place that you've looked many times before you finally see them.

If you extend this a bit further to the spiritual, we've all been conditioned over the years to believe that spirits don't exist (from childhood monsters under the bed to things you tell yourself for comfort after watching a scary movie). It stands to reason that a single strong spiritual experience could break down the barriers we've built for ourselves...

Then again, it just might just be a positive hallucination that enables us to build a mental framework of ever intensifying hallucinations...

Your mileage may vary.

I think it is true, but not for voodoo reasons. It's a psychological fact that we take in much more information from our surroundings than we are consciously aware of. The reason for that is because our subconscious mind filters the information and only pushes forward to our conscious mind the information that it thinks is important. A good example of this is when your sitting in a crowed restaurant with many conversations taking place around you, but you're only focused on what your husband is saying. I think everyone can already see and hears ghosts, but for most of us our subconscious mind filters them out. But if we can convinces our subconscious mind that ghosts are important information, I think it will continue to push it forward to our conscious mind.

hmmm, i've only ever seen 1 spirit: my grandfather in the house we shared right after his death. i took it as a goodbye, and i was OK with that. i dream about dead loved ones frequently, though, and i truly believe they are communicating with me. it's comforting to know that the connection is never truly broken.
